HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism (low thyroid levels in the blood stream) is known to be a problem in the Basenji breed with a 16.3 % (Michigan State University) occurence rate. It is the most common endocrine disorder in dogs. The thyroid gland is known as the master gland and controls the speed of metabolism of almost all body cells. Thyroid deficiency can be characterised by skin and coat problems, aggressiveness, lethargy, obesity, mental dullness and irregular heat cycles, infertility, low fertility, cold intolerance. These are the main symptoms but it can also be manifested with many other problems as well.

Trainers have noted a definite improvement in behaviour with dogs which have tested low normal range of thyroid when given a low dosage thyroid supplement. Diagnosis requires a simple thyroid level blood test. A comprehensive and cost effective Thyroid panel includes FT4 (Free T4 by dialysis),TgAA and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).
